About Minneapolis

Minneapolis is one of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. While St. Paul is the capital, Minneapolis has a higher population and tends to be mistaken for the capital of Minnesota. Minneapolis is often abbreviated at Mpls, so now you know what that's all about :3

    Facts and Trivia:

  • Northeast Minneapolis and Uptown have large art communities and several galleries, theatres, Purple Rain.

  • First Ave has been a starting point for several local bands such as Brother Ali, Semisonic, Atmosphere, Tapes n' Tapes, Soul Asylum, Dillenger Four, American Head Charge and Prince.

  • The Twins and the Golden Gophers both had new stadiums built in 2009.

  • Uptown is a safe and welcoming area for the GLBT community. Minneapolis has many GLBT bars and establishments, several of which host gothic dance nights.

  • Bob Dylan is from Duluth, which is found in northern MN, but played free shows on the U of M campus, where he attended school.

  • Target is based in Minneapolis.

  • The Zombie Pub crawl has more than doubled in size in the last year, last year being 1,200-2,000, and this year being closer to 5,000.

  • The Minneapolis College of Art and Design taught notable alums Mary GradPre (illustrator of the internationally famous Harry Potter books) and American manga-ka and Marvel comic artist Tania del Rio.

  • The Mary Tyler Moore Show was based in Downtown Minneapolis, so Nicollet Mall hosts a statue of Mary Tyler Moore throwing her hat in the air in front of the Dayton's flagship store, now Macy's.

  • Minneapolis tends to be sectioned by areas of town instead of Burroughs like New York AND neighborhoods. Most notably Uptown, Downtown, Dinkytown, Northeast (also called Nordeast), the Warehouse District/The North Loop and neighborhoods Camden, Powderhorn, Phillips, University, Whittier, Central and Longfellow.

  • The Twin Cities house the largest Somali and second largest Hmong population outside of their native countries.

  • We have the Mall of America! Yay! And no sales tax on clothes! DOUBLE YAY!

  • Authors Garrison Keillor, Sinclair Lewis, Al Franken (also MN junior senator for MN), F. Scott Fitzgerald are from MN. Emma Bull and Pamela Dean wrote fantasy books that take place in Minnesota.

  • Mallrats and Fargo were filmed here. Fargo is not in Minnesota. It's in North Dakota.
